Regarding the Eurobarometer survey published on Wednesday placing Cyprus in the 2nd worse position regarding corruption with 94%, the Cyprus Integrity Forum would like to comment as follows:
Cyprus ranking second, after Greece, with 94%, causes us to feel saddened for the negative image our country has, it is however a positive indication that society demands change. We firmly believe once society itself acknowledges and admits the problem, only then is change in attitude feasible and subsequently change in the political and social structure.
Disappointment of the people urges all of us to exercise pressure and work towards eliminating all incidents of corruption, in every sector, not just the political one. Cyprus Integrity Forum with the guidance from international supervisory organisations, approaches all stakeholders with intent to collaborate and with the goal to introduce optimum practices and procedures. Since its establishment and until today, it has achieved to assist through consulting several stakeholders, so they can adequately comprehend the dimension of the problem and introduce correct administration guidelines. In addition, it receives, and it constantly provides, ongoing information to the society, the business sector and the state regarding the fatal consequences of corruption.
We acknowledge that political will is required and we receive positively the appointment of the Commissioner for Transparency and the Members of the Independent Anti-Corruption Committee, which has taken place only recently, on the 8th of July. We are certain we will soon receive positive results. Cyprus Integrity Forum is at their disposal, as well as to any stakeholder wishing to collaborate. We firmly believe that combating corruption is a choice and not a laborious effort.
